My name is Carolyn and I am a sophomore majoring in Public Relations at UW-Whitewater. I went from being a Psychology major to a Broadcast Journalism major to a PR major. Right now my goal is to find something I love and something that I am good at. Psychology was not the field for me. I found it boring and I think the only reason I picked that in the first place was because I know there is a high demand and they get paid pretty well. I loved Broadcast and I think that being in front of the camera is where is belong. I had the position of one of the panelists on “The Blender” which is kind of like the show “Chelsea Lately” on E. That show is my personality- celebrity gossip is what I love- especially when it is making fun of what celebrities do. I guess I’m such a loud mouth and so opinionated that it worked. So you may ask why did I switch to PR? Well, I kind of realized that broadcast is a really hard field to get into and I would have to leave Wisconsin and move somewhere like Chicago, New York, L.A. and I don’t think I’d be able to leave my family, especially my mom. I feel like I might be better off in something that is more stable like PR. So I guess this is kind of a trial run to see if I’m good at it and more importantly, if I like it. So right now I am learning about what it is that we do: managing and maintaing relationships between organizations and its publics. As of right now I’ve made a Fact Sheet for Tomorrow’s Hope and I am working on my resume. So far, I enjoy the work and it is something different and I guess I will just have to see where this goes. Ideally, what I have in my mind, is I want to do is PR for celebrities or PR work in the fashion industry.

ReplyDeleteHi Carolyn,
ReplyDeleteI haven’t heard of “The Blender” but I love the show “Chelsea Lately” so I’m sure its something I would like. Broadcast journalism sounds like an awesome field I hope you find something you enjoy just as much! I can definitely relate to having a tough time choosing a major. I have had about three now but I think public relations is where I’ll stay. I’m also interested in doing PR in the fashion industry. I think this is a great way to be a part of the fashion industry without being on the retail side of things. Hope everything works out and you enjoy public relations!
Hey Carolyn!!
ReplyDelete"The Blender" is so funny to watch, I enjoy your input on the stupid things celebs. do. As for you loving broadcasting I think you would be amazing!! My advice and you can take or leave it is do what you love. Although you may have some hard times letting go of your mother, she wants you to be happy. I'm not trying to persuade you to do either or and I'm pretty sure our professor's going to shoot me down for saying it. But my brother told me to fallow my dreams and I think you should too!
I'll love ya in any decision you make!!

I think a PR background is an absolutely fabulous starting place for a lot of jobs. My past experience has taught me that you don't need a Broadcast, Theatre, Journalism degree to do that sort of thing and what you learn in PR will easily adapt to Broadcast Journalism. You can always take a minor in Journalism, just give that extra boost as well. But the most important part is that you enjoy it!

Carolyn I'm glad you found the major that will make you happy. There would be nothing worse than to get your degree and not like your job. Yea, moving away from family is going to be hard for everyone one in the future. It's just not the same when you don’t have home cooked meals.
